A Living Hope
1 Peter 1:3-6a
By Pastor Rachel
This passage reveals 5 important things as a result of Jesus’ resurrection.
1. New Birth
God has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ (1 Peter 1:3 NIV, similarly hereinafter). We were living under sin and couldn’t do what is right even if we tried; but Jesus “himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness” (1 Peter 2:24). By his wounds we have been healed. You have become a new person!
2. Great Expectation
A life without hope is agonising; but now we live with great expectation. In John 14:1-3 Jesus said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; …If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me…”
Everything has been made new in the Lord; we are neither helpless nor hopeless. God has anointed you with his love and led you into his presence with his sweet calling. Know that our resurrected Lord gives you great expectation, and enter each day with thankfulness. Every day is a new day!
3. An Inheritance
Because of the Resurrection, there is an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade—kept in heaven for you. As written by Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:17-22, “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; … But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, … For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.” We are assured eternity in heaven with God through what Jesus did for us. That’s the big deal about Easter.
You “through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation” (1 Peter 1:5). Our salvation is protected by what Jesus did on the cross and what God did three days later. You are protected because of what happened on that first Easter morning so long ago. No one and nothing can separate us from God’s love, even on the last day of your life.
5. Wonderful Joy
Celebrate the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Remember that now you have a new life, that you can live with great hope, and that there is an inheritance for you that no one can take away because of God’s protection through his salvation. Rejoice! There is wonderful joy ahead.
Before the Resurrection, death was the final curtain call. We had no hope. But after the Resurrection, we have a living hope because Jesus Christ is alive! We are promised an everlasting life.
